bikesmith

How it all started

In 1947 Melvin Smith started Prescott Cycle Center at Downtown Prescott and later moved the shop to Sheldon Street. In 1972 the business switched hands. Dan Olson - a master wheel builder at Schwinn for 30 years in Chicago- bought the business from Melvin. In 1982, Don sold the shop to Dave Tilton, a dynamic bicyclist and a retired teacher. After a while Dave really missed teaching and so in 1984 he sold the shop to me,John Stryker. First it was the Shop name contest and with over 2000 entries Bikesmith was the winner. We began to see an increase in our exercise equipment sales, which led to Bikesmith cycle and fitness. We moved to our current location in 1991. When the Whipple/Montezuma connector was first introduced with its bike lanes, I was privileged to lead the parade celebrating the opening of the road. All of the people who have worked with with me through the years have been instrumental in the shop's success and they all have a special place in my heart.
